The Chinese New Year - 26 January 2009 - The Year of the Earth Ox

Key words: Principles and Values

The Chinese Animal Zodiac holds strong fascination for East and West alike. Most people are aware of their year animal but unless you know a little about this astrology system it's highly unlikely you would be aware of your Lunar or Inner animal. For example, in my own chart I am a Water Goat year indicating intuition, imagination, honesty, sincerity and adaptability. My Lunar animal is the Monkey whose characteristics include a quick wit, an independent streak, pride, vanity and also loyalty in love. My inner (hour) animal is the Ox, indicating reliability, practicality, principles, patience, intelligence and values. These examples paint a pretty accurate picture of what I am about. To have an accurate idea of your inner animal you need to know your time of birth.

The animal zodiac, like our western zodiac becomes very complex when you study it at a deeper level. Anyone interested in studying Chinese Astrology - Four Pillars of Destiny should contact me cecilyb@tpg.com.au and I will recommend a couple of good teachers.

There are several legends as to the origin of the animals and how their positions on the Zodiac Calendar were achieved. I don't know if any of them are true but they are related to Chinese Folklore and as such interesting. One of those legends goes something like this. The great Buddha invited all the animals in the kingdom to a meeting where 12 animals would be chosen to represent the 12 segments of the calendar. To achieve this the animals were told that the first 12 to cross the river and set foot on the opposite riverbank would be declared the winners. The animals met on the bank to begin the competition. Some of the animals were smarter than others and used interesting tactics to get to the other side first. The Rat persuaded the Ox to allow himself and the Cat to cross the river on his back.

Almost to the other side Rat pushed Cat into the swirling current and unfortunately Cat didn't make it across in time and missed out on a calendar position and so ended the long friendship of Rat and Cat.

When the Ox was almost at the other side the Rat jumped off and was the first to set foot on the riverbank. As a result of his cleverness Rat was awarded the 1st position on the Animal Zodiac. Rat was followed by Ox 2nd, Tiger 3rd, Hare 4th, Dragon 5th, Snake 6th, Horse 7th, Goat 8th, Monkey 9th, Rooster 10th, Dog 11th and Pig 12th. This tale pretty much represents the characteristics of the 12 animals such as the scheming, clever tactics of the Rat and the kind, tolerant behaviour of the Ox. Someone born in a Rat year could be described as clever, ambitious, resourceful, industrious and scheming. Ox people are said to be kind, patient, reliable, intelligent and courageous. The Ox person is very aware of what's happening around him/her and has the knowledge to put things right. The Ox is considered to be a traditionalist who believes in good old-fashioned principles and values.
