Scorpio: 24 October to 21 November

Element: Water Sign (Emotional) 2nd Decan in the Water Trilogy

  Quality: Fixed (Leadership, Power, Control)

Polarity: Feminine, Negative, Yin (non initiating, passive, receptive)

Symbology: Scorpion, the Eagle and the Phoenix, three symbols representing the three possibilities of Scorpio - the scorpion who retaliates and is defensive (often without reason), the eagle who has risen above the need for dominance and the phoenix who transcends his own limitations and becomes a symbol of ultimate power coupled with self mastery. Seasonally, Scorpio is a time of retreat: animals hibernate, leaves fall, the tree's sap withdraws from the extremities, mankind goes indoors and lets the fields lie fallow. All of nature is retreating in order to regenerate later. The function of Scorpio is to recognise and know everything at its basest level, to strip away cover-ups and to eliminate everything not necessary to a full functioning of life.

Mythology: The myth of Scorpio has to do with Orion, the mortal hunter much loved by Diana. Orion had dallied with the daughter of Oenopion and was punished by being blinded in both eyes. However, Orion's sight was returned to him by turning his eyes to the Sun, whereupon he boasted that there was no beast that could kill him. Jupiter released a scorpion who stung Orion and killed him, and as a reward, the scorpion was turned into the constellation Scorpio.

Glyph: The Glyph for Scorpio represents a coiled serpent ready to strike, or the scorpion with his barbed tail raised in order to strike, or it can be seen to be the erect penis with its latent procreative powers. The house ruled by Scorpio in the chart shows where you are constantly renewing and working to improve the status quo, where you have the most determination and purpose in life and where you have the most power for "good or evil". It is where you seek deeper understanding of that area of life and where you can be the most secretive, manipulative and scheming. Scorpio has an affinity with the 8th house as both have to do with going within, often through crisis, to get to the heart of the matter. Scorpio is ruled by Pluto and co-ruled by Mars and has an affinity with the quincunx aspect.

Ruling Planet: Pluto Colour: Black Gemstone: Topaz

Body Rulership: Scorpio rules the bowels, the reproductive system, the pelvic area, the eliminative system and the appendix.

Keyword: Intensity Keyphrase: "I Desire"

Other descriptive keywords for Scorpio: Positive: Resourceful, ambitious, psychic, straightforward, enterprising, courageous, bold, shrewd, loyal, magnetic, fearless, intense, sexual, fascinating. Negative: Jealous, unforgiving, devious, ruthless, cruel, vindictive, obsessive, envious, uncommunicative, relentless, suspicious, sarcastic, malicious

Scorpio is the sign of power - once she makes a decision, nothing will stop her and she can achieve anything. She is also prepared to wait years to get what she want and can be very devious, underhanded and cunning in order to get it. She has a need to be powerful in her own right and doesn't like to lose control or be told what to do. She tends to be obsessive and intense, with enormous willpower and tenacity of purpose, and as a result is usually either very successful in her chosen profession or will work ruthlessly to undermine others so she may rise. (Scorpio is extremely self-protective and needs to learn the lesson of vulnerability) She is so busy protecting herself from hurt or betrayal that she never really allows herself to be touched at all. Likewise, she rarely expresses her deepest feelings or longings as she is afraid these will be used as a weapon against her at some future time.

Scorpio is extremely revengeful, malicious and spiteful when crossed and makes a relentless and remorseless enemy. However, she is the true psychic of the zodiac and often has great healing powers as well as the ability to penetrate unerringly to the source of any problem. Scorpio's appearance is intense with the eyes giving the impression of being able to see right into the heart of matters, with can be either very confronting or very magnetic. She is often dark in colouring, wiry in build, hairy, with a roman nose and she gives the impression of physical and emotional strength. There is often an aura of sexuality surrounding her.

Allegory: "To you Scorpio, I give a very difficult task. You will have the ability to know the minds of men, but I do not permit you to speak about what you learn. Many times you will be pained by what you see, and in your pain, you will turn away from Me and forget that it is not I but the perversion of My Idea that is causing your pain. You will see so much of man that you will come to know him as an animal and wrestle so much with his animal instincts in yourself that you will lose your way. But when you finally come back to Me, Scorpio, I have for you the supreme gift of Purpose." And Scorpio stepped back.
